Banana Cocktail Cubes

New ‘nana kicks

Continuing my experiments with amateur mixology, and my love for all things banana-flavoured, this is one of the ideas I wanted to try after managing to find a moderately-priced banana liqueur.

I used:

Banana juice
Creme De Bananes
Pineapple juice (optional)

First, mix one part creme de bananes to two parts banana juice, to ensure that it will freeze, then pour carefully into an ice cube tray.

Mix two parts grenadine (for the consistency) and one part Vimto (to give it a slightly darker colour), then drip a little carefully into each compartment using a straw. I think they almost resembled mini Rorschach tests….

Leave to freeze overnight for 24 hours, and they’ll look like this….

Being a first attempt at this one, I wasn’t 100% sure at the time if they’d freeze properly, but it worked with some careful prising, and they looked exactly how I wanted.

They taste great on their own, but I also tried a couple in some pineapple juice.

Have fun trying these yourself!

Popcorn & Banana Tic Tac Vodka

….made with Minions!!

Here’s one I’ve been meaning to post up for a little while, now finally online in time for ‘National Vodka Day’ (seriously though, who makes these days??) – popcorn and banana flavoured vodka, made using Tic Tacs. The latter was made using Minion Tic Tacs – their sacrifice shall not be in vain!

For the popcorn-flavoured vodka, I poured one container’s worth of Tic Tacs into the bottle, then just a little extra from another container, then allowed to brew.

Around 90 minutes later, it looked like this….

Then the following day, it looked like this….

To play it safe, I decided to allow it to brew for another day, then moved on to the next one.

For the banana-flavoured vodka, I added about half of a large container, equivalent of a regular sized one. A little less may have sufficed, as it left more to filter out, but it was still worth it.

I ended up having bits of Minion floating around….

A few days later, both had the right scent – just needed to be filtered and taste-tested.

Given that this was my first attempt at flavouring vodka, I was quite pleased with how they turned out, having tasted both. Still need to try these out on friends, hope they’re ready….

Summer JD Cocktail (version 2)

For World Cocktail Day 2016

This evening I discovered that it was in fact ‘World Cocktail Day’, via Twitter – well, who am I to argue? I decided to try putting something together, using what I already had in stock, and this was the result.

‘Summer JD’

In this order:
A shot of Cococabana coconut rum
Tropical juice
A dash of Honey Jack Daniel’s
A couple of grapes injected with grenadine, with a little more grenadine added on top

Considering it was completely improvised on the spot, I couldn’t have been happier with this, it tastes great.

As an aside , this is worth trying in itself – grapes injected with grenadine and Blue Curacao. This is something I first tried last year, and occasionally add to cocktails as a result.

Injected Grapes

Have fun experimenting!

How To Make Minion & Frozen Shots

Let It Flooowww

These were actually among the first themed shots that I created last year, when I started to play around with shots using popular culture as inspiration, so thought it was about time I posted them up here.

The ‘Minion’ shot

Banana juice
Orange juice
Blue Curacao

I’ve made a whole load of cocktails using banana juice (also very nice on its own), this was the first shot. Mix two parts banana juice with one part orange juice, just enough to get a bolder yellow colour, then add a dash of Blue Curacao.

The ‘Frozen’ shot

This actually happened after a request from a friend, a fan of Frozen, to make one based on the animated film.

Simply a measure of Bitter Lemon, with a dash of Blue Curacao.

Have fun trying these, there will be more to come.

Sweet Shop Shots (part 1)

Adult refreshments inspired by childhood treats

Over the past several months, I’ve been playing around with various themes for shots and cocktails. These include films, Marvel superheroes, cakes and this one – sweets (or ‘candy’, depending on where you are). Having discovered that it was possible to purchase Fruit Salad and Black Jack-flavoured schnapps, I was inspired to expand on that theme and see what others I could come up with. Feeling nostalgic? I was!

Sweet Shop‘ – Bubble Gum Soda & Fruit Salad schnapps

Combined them to make a shot, and also a cocktail.

Bountiful‘ – Chocolate Mickey Finn & Coconut Rum

The clue’s in the name!

Fruity Jack‘ – Black Jack & Fruit Salad schnapps

Had to put the two together!

Raspberry Creme‘ – Chocolate Mickey Finn & Grenadine

You know the Raspberry Creme chocolate you often get in boxes of chocolate?

Jelly Peach‘ – Peach schnapps, Orange juice and Grenadine

Served with the inspiration behind it. I was so happy to discover that it was still possible to buy peach jellies, as they were a favourite of mine.

This is just the first handful I’ve made – I’ll post the next part once I’ve tried out some other ideas. Hope you enjoy these.

Banana & Pineapple Mocktail

For when you need to be sensible!

Whilst coming out of the end of a rare weekend hangover, I felt my thirst returning but obviously didn’t want anything with a kick just yet – this was the result.

I used:
Banana juice
Pineapple juice

Pour the banana juice in first, to just below halfway. Add an equal amount of pineapple juice, then top up with Vimto. No need to stir.

A few friends took an interest, so thought I’d share it here. I can’t promise it’ll cure a hangover…. but it’s worth a shot!

‘Summer Jack’ cocktail

A winter blues beater (or, how to turn Winter Jack on its head)

This started off as one idea, that morphed into something better. Why wait for the seasons to change?

I used, in this order:

– A shot of Cococabana coconut rum (Did you know that I’ve been spelling that wrong this entire time? Random fact.)
– Banana juice
– Pineapple juice
– A dash of Vimto
– A shot of Jack Daniel’s Winter Jack apple whiskey (though you could possibly reverse the last two)

Initially, I made this with the first four ingredients, but it tasted like something was missing, like it needed something extra to finish it off. Reaching for the Winter Jack, I realised that’s what it was – it needed an apple-y kick to finish. Given that it’s such an important role, I chose to name this after that key ingredient.

Here’s another one to add to the growing list of cocktails that incorporates banana juice – I recommend it if you can find it.
